Scalp Tattoos vs. Scalp Micropigmentation: Which is Better?

scalp micropigmentation st louis moScalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is not a procedure that you would typically find being offered in your neighborhood tattoo shop. One reason is that the inks used in tattoo shops are designed to last for many decades. But they also fade, disperse, and turn shades of blue-green over time.

By contrast, the specialized pigments that the Moore Hair Clinic uses in scalp micropigmentation procedures for our hair restoration patients are specifically designed to:

  • Hold their color and not turn green over time
  • Precisely match the color of each individual patient’s hair follicles

Over time, true SMP pigments will become less strong, but they will not change in color in any way. The effects of scalp micropigmentation hair loss treatment procedures typically last for between five to seven years, after which time you will need to repeat the process in order to maintain the appearance of naturally occurring hair follicles.

Why Not Use Tattoo Shop Needles?

With respect to Scalp Micropigmentation, tattoo shop needles are much too large for scalp micropigmentation procedures, and penetrate much deeper into the skin’s dermal layers. SMP, in contrast, Scalp Micropigmentation utilizes highly specialized SMP needles which are specifically designed in such a way as to match the width of a human hair, and are only designed to penetrate to the second dermal skin layer, thereby offering minimal discomfort for the patient. Because of this, we are also able to ensure much greater accuracy of hair follicle replication for an extraordinarily natural looking outcome.
